The Awaken Journey

by Christelle Myburgh

The Awaken Women’s Conferences in Stellenbosch, Johannesburg and Swakopmund became an annual highlight for numerous women in South Africa and Namibia over the past five years. Countless testimonies of healing, restoration, deliverance and empowerment resonated after each gathering.

Consequently, it was a challenging test of obedience to God when He led us onto a different path this year. To “sacrifice” the large Awaken Conferences in Stellenbosch and Johannesburg for several smaller gatherings all over South Africa was a tough decision for the Awaken Team and somewhat disappointing for faithful former attendees. Yet we had a strong conviction that Awaken should not be limited to two extraordinary events, but our resources and manpower should rather be applied to make conferences and other Awaken events accessible to several communities. We firmly believe, according to Zechariah 4:10, that small beginnings should not be despised but celebrated, since God rejoices to see the work begin! We are indeed eager to witness the growth of Awaken Women’s Ministry all over South Africa.

Accordingly, our current theme, “A wise woman builds”, proved to be true regarding the women in a number of Shofar congregations over the past seven months. Pietermaritzburg had their first Awaken Conference. Pretoria, George and the Winelands churches all hosted Awaken weekend retreats. Bloemfontein had an Awaken picnic. Secunda and Tygerberg had Awaken worship evenings. Hermanus organised an Awaken event to launch the NeoLife Pregnancy Crisis Centre. Piketberg presented a joyous occasion to honour older women for their wisdom and to learn from their life experiences. Swakopmund in Namibia had a full house, as usual, for their annual Awaken Conference that was presented in June.

We will continue building in our communities! Please follow our Awaken Facebook page for information on conferences, retreats, outreaches and other events that are planned in your region for the remainder of this year. Proverbs 14:1 The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
